Towards Clean Energy for the Mediterranean: The Role of Regional Electricity Market Integration

  • Starts: Nov 21, 2017

The Mediterranean region has a key role to play in the implementation of the Paris Agreement (AP) on Climate Change. To achieve the objectives of the Paris agreement, renewable energy must be mobilized on a larger scale.

However, a larger-scale integration of renewable energy in the electricity systems is a major challenge for electricity companies, as the electricity systems would have to increase their flexibility to accommodate an important share of renewable energy. This level of flexibility could be achieved through regional integration.

This would reduce the level of carbon in the electricity systems without running significant structural costs, which may be necessary of the flexibility increase.

This workshop aims to highlight the role of Mediterranean integration and cooperation for the implementation of the Paris Agreements. A Mediterranean integration of electricity systems would make it possible to connect countries of the Southern shore, which are rich in carbon-free energy resources, to countries on the Northern shore countries which are eager for carbon-free electricity and willing to pay for it.

This workshop is part of the Mediterranean Forum for Electricity and Climate Change and in line with the objectives of the objectives of  "The European Union package 'Clean energy for all Europeans' explained to the Mediterranean countries" workshop which was held in Malta in May 2017.
