Today, the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) is the only Mediterranean regional initiative gathering international development institutions, national governments, local authorities, and civil society.
As of July 1st, 2021, and eleven years after its creation, the CMI will move up to a new phase:
The World Bank Group will remain a member and contributor. At the strategic level, the WBG will continue contributing to the Center’s main orientations. On the operational side, the WBG will maintain its financial support as well as the solid technical partnerships that have been built over the years.
With this new impetus, the CMI will pursue the overarching goal of enhancing Mediterranean integration.
Currently, the CMI focuses selectively focuses on the socio-economic transformation of the region (co-development, integration, and human capital mobility) while building its resilience to shocks (mainly climate change and conflict, causing forced displacement), with youth and gender as cross-cutting themes.
A new Strategy for CMI 5.0 for 2021-2024 is being prepared.
“Never before was Mediterranean integration more needed than it is now. The region faces a unique opportunity to fulfill its historical mandate in bringing closer its peoples, cultures, resources, and assets. Enhancing Mediterranean integration means going beyond trade and addressing regional common challenges in areas such as human capital mobility and environmental resilience. Regional collaboration is also critical to stimulate recovery from COVID 19. Many actors are involved. Many lives will benefit from such integration. Now is the time to push forward” says Blanca Moreno-Dodson, manager of the CMI.
We look forward to staying engaged with you and to pursuing our collaboration for a stronger and better integrated Mediterranean.
