The Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) is organizing a workshop to launch the AFD-World Bank report "Climate Change and Migration: Evidence from the Middle East and North Africa". This report is the main output of a research project launched in 2010 and follows two previous workshops held in 2010 in Marseille, and 2012 in Paris. 

Climate change and migration are major concerns in the MENA region. The study suggests that households in MENA countries do perceive changes in the climate and their economic implications. The coping and adaptation strategies available to them to deal with weather shocks and climate change are limited, as are community and government programs. The research backing the report findings draws on evidence collected through surveys in five countries of the region including Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Syria and Yemen, as well as other surveys and census data.

The report concludes that although climate change is not the main driver of today’s migration flows, it already contributes substantially to migration decisions and its impact is likely to increase in the future.

The event aims to present and discuss the study results with target countries high-level representatives and international experts from the GIZ, the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security.
