[Webinar] Empowering Mediterranean Youth to Strengthen the Governance of Ecosystems

  • Starts: Apr 06, 2021
  • Ends: Apr 07, 2021
  • Location: Virtual
  • By: CMI, MedYCA, IUCN Med

  • Context

More than a year after the COVID-19 pandemic began, the global economy has been disrupted with long-lasting adverse effects. As economic and industrial activities were brought to a near-standstill, the environment sometimes took the advantages and showed improvement in the quality of air, undisturbed ecosystems and wildlife, cleaner water resources, and less noise pollution.

On the occasion of the IUCN One Nature, One Future Global Youth Summit, youth from all over the world will gather to propose actions for nature, climate, and social justice aiming at enhancing a better and greener post-pandemic world.

    Objectives

Organized jointly by IUCN Mediterranean and the Center for Mediterranean Integration’s Mediterranean Youth for Climate Action (MedYCA) network, these two webinars will engage worldwide youth participants to share their ideas, strategies, and solutions for a healthy, fair, and green recovery. The two webinars will aim to:

    • Showcase scientific evidence on the drivers and risks of climate change in the Mediterranean region, as well as its socio-economic impacts on territories.
    • Explore the main challenges faced by youth when developing grassroots strategies for the ecosystem and territorial resilience.
    • Provide knowledge and actionable solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
    • Reflect on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the environment and ecosystems.
    • Explore long-lasting positive environmental change in a post-pandemic world.

    Target Audience

The webinars will target global youth with diverse backgrounds and a common interest to shape a healthier, more resilient post-pandemic world.  Climate and environmental researchers, social entrepreneurs, climate change activists, and youth from different disciplines are all encouraged to register.

The webinars will be held online. If you wish to participate, please register here to receive connection details.

    Outcomes

These webinars will lead to the production of a summary report as well as a contribution to an outcome statement that will be delivered at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in September 2021 in Marseille.

The summary report will feature key insights and synthesize the main discussion points held during the webinars.

It will be produced by the Mediterranean Youth for Climate Action network under the guidance of the CMI climate change team and the Territorial Resilience to Climate Change technical hub members.

The Outcome Statement to the IUCN World Conservation Congress will feature recommendations of MedYCA members for a better and greener post-pandemic recovery.

Both documents will be presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress and promoted within the upcoming major international climate events, such as the CoP 26 in Glasgow and the United Nations 2021 Food Systems Summit.
