    Background

46.5% of the total population in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is under the age of 25 making it one most youthful regions worldwide.

However, about 30% of the youth population is currently unemployed. Youth unemployment has been a well-known factor driving migration worldwide and in MENA  the situation is no different, young people are fleeing their home countries and their unfulfilled aspiration looking for a way to better their lives.

The YMV Debate will focus on ‘Youth and Mobility in the Mediterranean’ and will include opening remarks by the Head of the EU Representation, Alain Dumort, the Center for Mediterranean Integration Manager, Blanca Moreno-Dodson, and the YMV Coordinator at the Anna Lindh Foundation, Regina Salanova.

On this occasion, four young debaters from Jordan, Egypt and France will provide evidence and data on the topic and will engage with the audience and stakeholders in a meaningful dialogue around the motion: “This House supports the mobility of young people in the Mediterranean being a source of transformation of people and territories.”

    Context

On the evening of 13th November, the Centre d’information Europe Direct/ EUROCIRCLE in Marseille will host “Young Mediterranean Voices Debate: Marseille”, the latest in a series of public debates launched in Barcelona in February 2018 that bring authentic youth voice from the South Mediterranean to Europe through intercultural debates. The event is co-organised by the Anna Lindh Foundation, the EU Representation in Marseille, and by the Centre for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) of the World Bank Group, co-partner for Young Med Voices.

    About the Young Mediterranean Voices

Young Mediterranean Voices (YMV) is the flagship debate programme connecting civil society, education and policy-makers across the South Mediterranean and Europe. The programme provides opportunities to open doors for young influencers to shape policy and media narratives.

Building on more than five years investment in the field, Young Mediterranean Voices empowers young people to enhance a culture of dialogue, to contribute to public policy and shape media discourses, and to create a shared understanding with peers across the Mediterranean on how to address issues of common concern to their communities.

Coordinated by the Anna Lindh Foundation, Young Mediterranean Voices is funded by the European Commission.

The language of the debate: English (there will be simultaneous interpretation during the debate).
