Context and Rationale  

Following the exchanges during the Peer-to-Peer Learning Workshop for Municipalities Hosting Refugees held in Amman, Jordan, from May 30th-June 1st 2016, CMI is organizing a series of workshops on priority sectors identified by municipalities affected by refugee influx, which will gather municipal, governmental and NGOs representatives to share their knowledge and experiences on priority sectors most affected by the influx of refugees: Solid Waste Management, Social Cohesion and Health.

Municipalities in Syria’s neighboring countries have seen their waste management capacities challenged by the massive influx of Syrian refugees, which has resulted in population growth and put increased pressure on service delivery for the host community, with a higher risk of social tension. According to a CMI Survey launched before the Amman Peer-to-Peer event, local authorities have found the Solid Waste Management sector significantly affected by the refugee crisis.

The joint World Bank-CMI Peer-to-Peer Learning Workshop for Municipalities Hosting Refugees on Solid Waste Management held in Bethlehem, Palestine on October 26th-27th, 2016 comprised a technical field visit to the Yatta dumpsite and Al Minya landfill, and a workshop with a parallel webinar gathering more than 80 Palestinian, Turkish, Jordanian, Iraqi and Lebanese municipal representatives. During the workshop, municipal representatives exchanged their experiences and best practices in this field and also highlighted several areas for further support. In particular, they underlined the need to discuss solutions and best practices on energy from waste production (e.g. biogas) and the use of new technologies, on small-scale projects with Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) for economic development and job creation, and to exchange with European experiences.

Objective

In light of the feedback and suggestions received, this webinar will focus on different aspects of Solid Waste Management, gathering private and public sector stakeholders for better knowledge- and experience-sharing. The main objectives will be to:

• Support local governments hosting refugees that are seeking to develop more efficient waste management solutions;
• Exchange best experiences and practices with other municipal partners in the region, as well as with the private sector and European stakeholders;
• Identify best practices and successful experiences in waste management to explore their potential replication in local governments hosting refugees and to collect them in a compendium of best practices.

Mediterranean and European local governments hosting a high number of refugees and public and private waste management stakeholders. Please confirm you interest to participate here.
