In the presence of the European commissioner Julian King, the Center for Mediterranean Integration joined more than 60 Euro-Mediterranean cities convening in Nice to take stand against terrorism. During the conference a common declaration consisting of 17 points of action was drafted and cosigned by the attending mayors.
This is a testimony to the necessity of local work on the field of violent extremism prevention.
In light of this conference, CMI representative, Jacques Ould-Aoudia presented the main recommendations of the CMI’s report on “Development and Violent Extremism”.
He stated to the French newspaper Nice-Matin that “radicalization comes as a response to a need for social revenge more than it being a spiritual desire”. “Today, we need to rebuild the social contract with youth”, he added, underlining the importance of focusing on youth as a core component in crafting solutions to the radicalization problem.
