The development of better-designed infrastructure is key for increased growth and competitiveness. Since 2009, the CMI has been engaged on the infrastructure and transport front through the EIB-led LOGISMED initiative. LOGISMED has the long-term objective of nurturing regional integration by facilitating trade and mobility between MENA countries and between them and the European Union. It targets the creation of a network of “Euro-Mediterranean Logistic Platforms” that would conform to international best practice.
The European Investment Bank’s operations in the Mediterranean partner countries have been brought together under the Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership (FEMIP) since October 2002.
The European Investment Bank, through the Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership (FEMIP), provides a practical instrument to meet the UfM’s objectives and brings together all European and Mediterranean countries. FEMIP finances economic and social development projects in the public and private sectors, but has also started to exploit the potential of this shared Euro-Mediterranean area providing valuable support in terms of studies and technical assistance.
As a first step in this latter initiative, the study published in March 2009 “A Euro-Mediterranean network of logistics platforms” and financed by the FEMIP Trust Fund, proposes to establish a network of Euro-Mediterranean logistics platforms covering all the Mediterranean Partner Countries, and the LOGISMED network, whose objective is to help to develop a private sector-friendly environment, with the public authorities playing a supporting and coordination role.
This project falls within the broader LOGISMED initiative which is included as the Action 17 in the 2007-2013 Mediterranean Regional Transport Action Plan (RTAP) - see “Program on the Development of a Network of Euro-Mediterranean Logistics Platforms (LOGISMED)” in euromedtransport.org. The RTAP was elaborated following the decision of the 2005 Marrakech Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Transport.
The “soft” component of LOGISMED, which is the LOGISMEDTA, developed at the CMI focuses on the constitution of a network of experts and trainers who can lead the transformation of the logistics sector and help to create a Euro-Mediterranean market of logistics specialists. In its role of multi-partner platform, the CMI has also been fostering greater dialogue and cooperation between governments and international finance institutions to help improve infrastructure, develop trade, and serve integration in the Mediterranean.

:: LOGISMED TRAINING ACTIVITIES
LOGISMED Is a Euro Mediterranean project based on a concept developed by the EIB whose main goal is to create a network of EMLPs (euro-Mediterranean logistical platforms).
LOGISMEDTA aims to address the low level of qualifications in the logistics sector by improving logistics training structures in Southern Mediterranean Member countries. It more specifically focuses on the constitution of a network of experts and trainers, at various levels, who will lead the transformation of the transport and logistics sectors and help create a Euro-Mediterranean market of logistic specialists.
The project targets the definition and implementation of an Action Plan with the goal of developing a shared training strategy for Southern Mediterranean Countries. This Action Plan should include the definition of a common reference for logistics jobs and a common model for logistics courses, as well as a proposal for enabling knowledge transfer (creation of a pool of itinerant trainers, definition of a student exchange programme, etc).
The purpose of LOGISMED's training activities is to create a network of Euro-Mediterranean Logistics Platforms, working under some common quality criteria that conform to international best practices; using common protocols, notably for electronic data interchange and sharing know-how. The final aim is to create a more competitive and strengthened logistics industry and to develop a private sector-friendly environment in the Mediterranean with the public sector playing a support and coordination role.
The technical partners involved in the LOGISMED training activities programme are the EIB as lead organisation, CETMO, UNIMED and the MPCs.
